Yes, another trip that we made. It was an over night trip from our house in Geinsheim to Östrich-Winkel in the Rheingau. This is the area where you will find the town of Rüdesheim and some of the best white wine in Germany. Just be careful because it is potent! So Wolfgang and I headed out on our bikes this last Thursday morning. We rode to Östrich and spent the night. We then rode back home on Friday morning. The round trip was a total of about 100 kilometers or about 60 miles. We had fabulous weather both days and only had one minor incident so it was a great success.
they had cut down all the wildflowers when they mowed the grass.
Riding over the bridge from Gustavsburg into Mainz -Kostheim.
This bridge goes over the Main River.
The Main river flows into the Rhein (Rhine) river.
This is the only picture I have of the Main river. It is actually MUCH pretty than this picture!
Here is a picture of Wolfgang standing by the Rhein river.
On the other side of the river is the city of Mainz.
Mainz is a beautiful city about 30 minutes from us by car
and about 1 hour by bike.
It has a wonderful Cathedral - the Mainzer Dom.
This is an old river ship that is now a restaurant.
I am sure at night it must be very nice
because it has a beautiful view of the Mainz skyline.
Everywhere in Germany there are castles of
different types and from different ages.
Here is one that is now a museum.
It is directly across the road from the ship restaurant.
Some castles are in better condition than others.
The Schloss (castle) in the town of Biebrich
has been beautifully restored.
The Biebrich castle sits directly on the Rhein
and can be viewed from the river cruise boats.
A great touch to top off your house don't you think?
What is it you ask?
Why it's a house made for swallow nests.
Yes, in one of the nature preserves we rode through,
one of the groups has created this roof with artificial nests for the swallows.
The question is, will it keep the flying S%$Ter's
from building a nest on your house?
The would load the grapes in the press
and turn it until the juice was squeezed out.
I guess they never saw the "I Love Lucy" show.
No this is not the castle.
The castle is actually located farther up the street in the middle of town.
This is a keep or tower.
They were used to mark the end of the "official" castle land and for safety.
You can see a long way from the top.
I did not go up so I am just guessing....
All around the area are beautiful roses.
We were lucky to be there when everything was blooming
and yes, it smelled wonderful.
Stopping for lunch in Hattenheim directly on the river.
Fabulous self-portrait of the Hennings.
Heading back out for the last leg of our journey.
Proof that I actually rode along.
Finally our hotel in Östrich.
I don't believe that you will find this location in a guide book
but it is the "real" Germany.
Not fancy but fabulously located in the middle of town allowing us to walk to and from our restaurant. Now this might not seem important on your way to the restaurant but the return trip is a whole other item. I said that the wine in the Rheingau is potent so you don't want to have to walk far home for at least two reasons, balance and bathroom access depending on how good your bladder may be!
Sitting out in the Hof is the Vintners cask.
The family Meckel has been in this location for a short time, since 1524.
I believe they might now be considered as locals but hey,
this is Germany where 500 years isn't really considered to be longterm.

We now come to the town of Eltville which is located in the Rheingau. It is only about 30 to 40 minutes from the town of Östrich, our destination. Eltville is a beautiful town and is known for its roses.
This is an old wine press. The would load the grapes in the press

Now I did say that we did have one minor incident and that happened about 50 feet from our hotel. Wolfgang's chain broke on his bike. Luckily, My Mann, knew how to fix it so we had no problem the next day riding home.
